Hi John and thanks so much for the course,
I loved it! As a young graduate looking to get into the voluntary sector I
found your advice invaluable. I volunteer for a local charity while looking for
my first job but it’s proving a very long process, especially in the current
climate… I do have my first interview coming up soon (so glad I now have all
your advice about how to present yourself in an interview!). I was hoping you
could also share some advice about the sort of questions employers tend to ask.
What can I do to prepare apart from knowing my CV really well and reading
thoroughly about the charity and the job itself? Also, any tips for calming nerves before the interview?
Thanks again.
I am glad to hear that you have an interview coming up. There are lots of questions you may be asked (see my book Job Interviews: Top Answers To Tough Questions) but the main thing is to work out what the top 6 or so items are on the employer shoping list and prepare good, short, punchy answers which show your matching skills. Do plenty of research on the organisation, and look carefully at your CV or application form to work out where you might be probed.
Everyone gets nervous before an interview. Eat or drink something sugary to prevent a dry mouth, use anti-perspirant on your palms, and practise taking deep breaths and answering questions just slightly slower than you would normally speak.
