CloseA charity or non profit board that looks outwards and thinks long-term is better able to answer key questions.
Looking outwards enables the board:
- to understand and be accountable to its key stakeholders
- to understand and adapt to the strategic context
- to make connections with others, seeking opportunities to learn and to collaborate.
In summary, a charity or non profit board that looks outwards and thinks long-term is better able to answer the following key questions:
- Is the organisation still relevant to our users needs? Are we still needed?
- Do we need to change what we do, cease some services, develop new ones or reach new audiences?
- Can we sustain what we are doing?
- Could we achieve our goals more effectively by working with others? Should we work in partnership? Should we merge?
- Do those with a stake in the organisation know enough about us?
The non profit board should never forget its aim is to achieve the purposes it was set up for. Keeping a charity going is not an end in itself. The organisation is simply the vehicle for its objects. The board should be open to the possibility that there are better ways of achieving its objects.
