CloseHow to know whether you are a trustee of your non profit organisation.
Surprisingly it is not always clear who the trustees of an organisation are, as you do not have to be called a trustee to be a trustee!
Trustees may be called different things: members of the management committee, directors, governors, council members or board members.Trustees are those who have the final say in what the organisation does (or does not) do.
It is important to know whether you are a trustee because trustees have specific duties. Make sure you know by checking your organisation's constitution or governing document. If it is still not clear, or if you think that someone in the organisation other than the trustees is making the decisions, take action to clarify the situation.
The constitution is also likely to state who is eligible to be a trustee, how they are selected and how long they can serve. These procedures need to be followed to ensure the trustees’ decisions are legitimate.
